New Street Station Update

The redevelopment of the station is now half way through. A date has been announced for the changeover to the redeveloped New Street Station entrance and concourse.

Sunday 28 April will see the closure of the current entrance opposite the Bullring, off Smallbrook Queensway, and the concourse containing the ticket offices and barrier to the platforms. The current small entrance in Stephenson Street will also close.

The new entrance in Stephenson Street will open leading to a new concourse – this will be situated between the current small entrance and the ramp up to the Pallasades shopping centre.

As you walk today passed this new entrance you can’t see into the concourse clearly but the signs are  that it is nowhere near finished. And neither does the outside. Compare the artist’s impression of the completed entrance above with the photos I took this week below.

To gauge the progress compare the two views below – the 4 April state is above the 27 February one in each pair.

They are supposedly working 24/7 on this, but, does the above progress in the last 5 weeks suggest that the 28 April opening will be achieved? Personally, I fear not, but clever contractors can work wonders once the infrastructure is in place
