There is to be a major switchover in April when the new Stephenson Street entrance opens. Overnight this will trigger the closure of the existing entrances from Smallbrook Queensway, the escalators from the Pallasades Shopping centre and the current one in Stephenson Street . The shopping centre will not close.
A further new entrance will be from Hill Street. A taxi and vehicle drop off point will open in Hill Street together with a short stay car park.
Inside the station, a new concourse will greet visitors with ticket office and machines and new escalators and lifts to platforms. How many retail outlets will be opened at switchover is unpublished as yet.
The £600million station refurbishment is meant to be completed in 2015 to coincide with the opening of the Metro extension from Snowhill station.
The 1000 workforce are currently working 24/7 to meet the April switchover. Will they make it? To me having wandered around the outside yesterday, I have my doubts.
Some photos I took around the station perimeter yesterday….
In case you haven’t seen it before, below is a video flythrough of the completed station published on the newstreetnewstart.co.uk website.
